Police: 8 injured in shooting at Wisconsin mall

Seven adults and a teenager were injured Friday in a shooting at the Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, police said, and the whereabouts of the shooter remain unknown.The shooter, who was not at the scene when police arrived, is believed to be a white man in his 20s or 30s, Wauwatosa Police Chief Barry Weber said.Weber said Friday evening that dispatchers received calls around 2:50 p.m. CT about an apparent shooting at the mall.Sister station WISN reported seeing tactical units going into the building. Several people were taken out on stretchers.Witnesses at the scene described seeing people running from the mall. One witness told WISN that they heard between 10 to 12 shots around 2:50 p.m. CT.Police said a preliminary investigation has led them to believe that the shooting was not a random act but the result of an altercation.The extent of the injuries of the victims was unknown, Weber said. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner said they are not responding to the scene at this time. Weber said the shooter is believed to be a white male in his 20s or 30s. Weber gave no motive for the attack.The crime scene is secure, police said late Friday. A father whose daughter works inside the mall told sister station WISN-TV that he got a call from his daughter, and she told him someone was shooting in the mall. Then, he heard gunshots through the phone and heard people start running.In a statement Friday afternoon, Wauwatosa Mayor Dennis McBride said, “The Wauwatosa Police Department is currently involved in an active shooter incident at Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa. Through the WPD’s Public Information Officer, more information will be released as if becomes available and is confirmed. Multiple injured victims have and are being transported from the north end of the Macy’s Department Store. None of the victims’ injuries appear to be life threatening. The perpetrator is ‘at-large’ at this time. There are approximately 75 police officers on scene at this time. It will take time to provide additional, and perhaps, more accurate information, but information will be provided as it becomes available.” Trish Cox’s 19-year-old nephew works at Finish Line sporting goods store. She said she was worried because the store’s phone wasn’t being answered and was frantic as she waited while FBI agents cleared the mall.An agent said the mall was being “methodically” cleared. Heavily armed FBI personnel were visible at the mall.Brookfield Properties, which owns the mall, said in a statement to WISN: “We are disheartened and angered that our guests and tenants were subject to this violent incident today. We are thankful for our partners at the Wauwatosa Police Department, and we are cooperating with them as their investigation develops.” The mall will remain closed until further notice, Weber said. Weber said the shooter is believed to be a white male in his 20s or 30s. Weber gave no motive for the attack.

The crime scene is secure, police said late Friday.
