Two parents have been arrested in connection with the homicide of their 1-month-old child last summer, officials with Vermont State Police said Wednesday. Investigators say 28-year-old Stephanie Gero and 36-year-old Matthew Cushing, both of St. Albans, are scheduled to stand trial this month on charges related to their child’s death. The infant, Leo Cushing, was reported dead early in the morning of Aug. 1 in a home he shared with his parents in Swanton.Police allege that while Gero was alone with the child, she injured him prior to his death. Cushing was reportedly aware that Gero was prohibited from spending time alone with the infant, but allowed her to watch the child unsupervised while he took a shower. An autopsy completed by the Vermont Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington identified the cause of death as a subdural hemorrhage to the brain, defining the death as a homicide. Gero faces charges of first-degree aggravated domestic assault and cruelty to a child with death resulting. She was jailed on $25,000 bail pending an arraignment on Thursday. Cushing faces a charge of cruelty to a child with death resulting and was released on a citation to appear on Dec. 22 at Vermont Superior Court in St. Albans. This is a developing report.
