Kenny Randolph thought he was just joining his friends at Bike World the day after Christmas. When he walked in, he started checking out bicycles. Soon after he was taking one out for a ride. When he came back from that 10-minute ride, he was shocked to find the Phat bike he just rode was now his. “I don’t even know where to start,” Randolph said. “I didn’t think anybody would do this for me.” Randolph can often be found riding his bike from Ankeny, Iowa, to Des Moines to get to work. It’s an 8-mile journey that sees him leave about an hour before he starts his 12-hour shift.”I commute up 2nd Avenue in the morning and it’s dark. I noticed often that Kenny was riding alongside the road with no helmet and the lights weren’t on,” said Erin Van Dorn, as she stood next to her husband, Eric, at Bike World. “We bike and so we understand safety. It concerned me.” The first time Van Dorn spoke with Randolph was in September. Van Dorn said she and her friends bought Randolph some protective gear. In the months after, she and her husband quickly became friends with Randolph. Together, the couple brought him to Bike World back in November and then again the day after Christmas. It was through the help of a GoFundMe that Randolph was gifted his new bike. Jeremy Davis was also at Bike World on Saturday when Randolph received his new bicycle. Saturday wasn’t the first meeting between the two.”On a day, it was about 104 degrees out. I pulled over and said, ‘Hey man. It’s too hot to be riding your bike out here. You want a ride?'” recalled Davis, reminiscing about a time several years ago. Watch the video above to learn more.
