Former President Donald Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump departed the White House on Marine One. The couple took in an aerial view of Washington D.C., before flying to Joint Base Andrews, Maryland to address supporters. Trump’s decision to leave several hours ahead of the inauguration ceremony makes him the first president in more than 150 years to refuse to attend the inauguration.

Kamala Harris was sworn in as Vice President by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor as her husband, the Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, held the Bibles of both former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and Harris’ “second mother” Regina Shelton. During the 59th inauguration ceremony, Jennifer Lopez performed “This Land is Your Land” and”America the Beautiful.” Lopez also acknowledged her Puerto Rican roots by briefly transitioning into Spanish saying “una nación, bajo Dios, indivisible, con libertad y justicia para todos,” she said, reciting a part of the Pledge of Allegiance: “One nation, under god, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.”

Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman delivered her poem titled, “The Hill We Climb” at Joe Biden’s inauguration ceremony. Gorman made history by becoming the first Youth Poet Laureate to speak at an inauguration. She wore a ring of a caged bird to pay tribute to poet Maya Angelou, who delivered a poem during Bill Clinton’s inauguration ceremony in 1993.
