Winter storm targets region: How much snow you can expect

A major winter storm will sweep through the region early this week, bringing hazardous travel conditions and up to a foot of snow. LIVE RADAR // CLOSURES & DELAYS // TRAFFIC MAPOur team of meteorologists is tracking the storm ahead of its forecasted arrival Monday night. Here’s what you need to know. TIMINGSome light snow will move across the region during the day Monday; however, this is separate from the main storm event, which ramps up later in the evening. The heaviest snow is expected to occur in the morning hours Tuesday. Snowfall rates are expected to reach one to two inches per hour, which will create a large impact for the morning commute. Light snow will be around for the rest of Tuesday, but additional accumulation in the afternoon and evening will be light.PRECIPITATIONWarm air thousands of feet up in the air will cause snow to switch over to a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain in central and southern Vermont during the height of the storm Tuesday morning. The North Country of Vermont and New York are likely to see snow with no other precipitation mixed in. Ice is not expected to be a major issue for trees or power lines, but will cut back on the snow totals in southern Vermont. HOW MUCH Widespread accumulation totals between 6 inches and a foot of snow are expected from this storm. Areas of southern Vermont will see slightly less, expecting between 3 and 6 inches of total accumulation. In anticipation of potentially dangerous weather conditions, the National Weather Service has placed most of the region under a winter storm warning that lasts until Tuesday night.
