This Memorial Day weekend, Run Vermont held smaller than normal run, but for a big cause. “We know what every nonprofit org. has gone through in the last 12-18 months. We know how tough it is to come up with funds to make it through until we can all open back up and be back to whatever the new normal is,” said Executive Director Peter Delaney. This weekend, Run Vermont’s Retro-Rally fundraised over $8,000 for Special Olympics. “They’re gearing up, they’re getting ready to start practices, some of them are doing walking groups so $8,000 will go a really long way to support our athletes in the fall,” said Kelsey Conway. She says they’re excited to get kids into track and field, golf, and bocci this year. Getting back together again is something the athletes haven’t been able to do in over a year. “Many of them, one of the best ways that they can get out and see people is through Special Olympics so we’re really excited to get back out and provide that opportunity for our athletes,” said Conway. That’s not all the retro-rally has helped provide. All athletes who are part of the Special Olympics, had free admission into the 5k, 10k, or 10-mile course options. “We have a number of them who will be running today alongside everyone else, which really speaks to the inclusive mission of Special Olympics Vermont,” said Conway. While thousands of runners wait patiently for the annual Vermont City Marathon this fall, executive director of Run Vermont, Peter Delaney, says today’s 80’s inspired run has people looking forward to the summer and brighter days ahead. “It’s wonderful that we can be a part of the community, everybody comes together and has a good time, and recognize the meaning of the weekend to remember all of those people who served for our country and gave us the freedom to do what were doing today,” he said. Run Vermont plans to host other events like this one throughout the course of the year until the Vermont City Marathon takes place. Our NBC5 team helps sponsor Run Vermont, and several members of the NBC5 team participated in this weekend’s retro-rally event.
