Vermont Fish & Wildlife is hosting a Free Fishing Saturday, where anyone can head out and fish without a permit. The same rules and regulations apply as they do all season long. For 9-year-old Yarrow Gombar and his grandfather Steve Mongeon from Winooski, they’re hoping that more people will get the rod and reel out this weekend.”Fishing is like my favorite thing to do on my free time probably,” Yarrow Gombar, a Master Angler from Winooski, said “Almost every day. Everyday on the weekend.”Gombar and Mongeon fish at the access area in Colchester, which they say is a busy spot on weekends. If you’re looking for a spot close to home, Vermont Fish & Wildlife commissioner Louis Porter said you can find a place on their website.Fish & Wildlife host this day twice a year, once in the summer and another day for ice-fishing in the winter. “The idea really is to give people who may of thought about going fishing or adding fishing to things they do like canoeing or kayaking but haven’t done it a chance to try it out,” Porter said. “The more time people spend outdoors the better their mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing is. So we want people to be outside and doing things whether that’s mountain biking, bird watching or hunting and fishing.”Mongeon said that fishing has become a positive outlet for his grandson.”He’s out here fishing and not playing video games,” Mongeon said. “There’s never a dull moment.”It is also a great way for the pair to spend some quality time together, outside by the water waiting for something to tug on their lines.
