Update: woman critical following Amish buggy crash

ALEXANDRIA BAY, New York (WWNY) – An Amish woman is in critical condition at a Syracuse hospital following a crash Thursday night in the town of Alexandria between the buggy she was in and a pickup truck.

State police say the buggy was turning onto State Route 12 from the Big M supermarket around 8:20 p.m. when it failed to yield the right of way and was hit by the northbound pickup.

Two people in the buggy, 36-year-old Peter Hershberger and 29-year-old Annie Hershberger, both from Hammond, were taken to Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown. Annie Hershberger was transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where police say she was listed in critical condition. Peter Hershberger was treated at Samaritan and released.

The driver of the truck, 80-year-old Peter Hummer of Redwood, was not injured.

Of the two horses pulling the buggy, one sustained minor injuries and the other was euthanized.
