Lake Placid got an early Christmas present. The Olympic Village will host the US Olympic trials again this December during the holidays. Trials for both ski jumping and nordic combined will officially be held on Dec. 24 and 25.Visitors from across the nation will come to watch, which also bodes well for businesses. “I hope it brings a lot of traffic to the businesses,” said Zachary Delia, owner of Zack Nation.Delia is ready for December and the influx of tourists the Olympic trials will bring to the village.”We have some vintage Olympics memorabilia which could be exciting for the people that come for the trials and we’re excited. Hopefully, this season brings much more than last season,” Delia said. The trials will take place at the Olympic Jumping Complex and Mt. Van Hoevenberg, with athletes hoping to earn a spot on Team USA for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.“This is really a rebirth of this venue and a return of the sport in the town that I grew up in, in the hills that I trained on with my team,” said Billy Demong, USA Nordic Sports CEO and former Olympian. Demong says the winner takes all format makes these trials different.“This is the only single event way to automatically qualify for the games so that means all of our best athletes will be here vying for that,” Demong said.$80 million worth of upgrades to the facilities played a big part in bringing the events back.“We’ve invested in trying to meet the modern standards of the sport and having reliable facilities but also in sharing the space with the elite athletes, with the public and consumers,” said Mike Pratt, CEO of the Olympic Regional Development Authority. Pratt says the improvements will make this a year-round training center. The first training camp will be in November ahead of the Olympic trials.“Well, certainly the home-field advantage is something that everyone strives for and we’re being able to provide it. Lake Placid was the first place to ever use a tiered podium and we’re doing everything we can to make sure Team USA athletes reach the podium again,” Pratt said.Demong has a message for the athletes.“Enjoy this, soak it up. You will never be in a place that has more heart and spirit for ski jumping and Nordic combined than right here in Lake Placid,” Demong said. The second day of events will be broadcast live on NBC.
