As the University of Vermont men’s hockey team prepares to kick off a 2021-22 campaign, its performance in the first coaches polls is less than encouraging. The Catamounts were picked repeat a last place finish in the 11-team Hockey East conference this season. Placement in the poll is determined through ranked-choice voting completed by coaches at each school.Vermont garnered 24 votes in the process, with the next-closest team receiving 32 votes. It follows a season during which the Catamounts posted just one win, a 5-4 home victory over Maine. Defending NCAA Division I champion the University of Massachusetts Amherst was picked to finish atop the conference by a large margin, earning eight of coaches’ first-place votes. The Minutemen were followed by three other schools from the commonwealth — Boston University, Boston College and Northeastern University. Men’s hockey will return to “The Gut” beginning Oct. 2, when the team is scheduled to play an exhibition match against Mercyhurst.
