A couple from Essex are about to hit a milestone few people reach. They’ll be celebrating their platinum jubilee on Nov. 3 and their love story is one for the ages. “We just love one another,” said Azarius Beaudoin.”Yeah. We still do,” said Sylvia Beaudoin.Since the day they met in Burlington in 1951, Sylvia and Azarius have fallen more in love every day. But their relationship wasn’t always easy.“When we first met and first started going together, I asked my mother and father if it was all right. They didn’t approve of it,” Sylvia said.So when they went on dates, they weren’t alone.“We had a chaperone no matter where we went,” Azarius said.”Oh, I had to have my brother with me,” Sylvia said.Azarius served in the Army during World War II and started dating Sylvia a few years later. He proposed after only six months of dating, but that memory is a little fuzzy.“I’ll leave you to answer that one,” Sylvia said.”I don’t remember!” Azarius said.Granted, that was seven decades ago. The memory of their wedding? Now that’s a little clearer – maybe because it almost didn’t happen.“It was nice but the priest was edgy. Her cousin was supposed to bring her to church,” Azarius said.“I was late,” Sylvia said.“And the priest said he was going to cancel the wedding. I told him, you can’t do it,” Azarius said. And good thing he didn’t.“We had a happy marriage. Very happy marriage. We don’t argue, we don’t fight,” Sylvia said. The couple raised their six children in the North End of Burlington, before ultimately retiring to Essex. Throughout their marriage, they loved fishing together. Azarius would also spend his time hunting and trapping. Now, the two enjoy spending time with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.Azarius, 93, and Sylvia, 88, have celebrated many milestone anniversaries but never thought they’d make it to 70.“I didn’t expect to live that long!” Azarius said. They both know exactly how they got this far and shared their secret for a successful marriage.“We trust one another. That’s what kept us together,” Azarius said.Although some memories are fading, their love will last forever.“I just hope we can live a little longer,” Azarius said.”And we still love each other,” Sylvia said.
