A 73-year-old Wisconsin woman died Monday when the wind picked up, and a large tree crashed down onto the gazebo in which she was sitting.Two residents of an apartment building were seated in a gazebo when a large tree snapped and came crashing down, killing the 73-year-old woman.”She always sat right where the whole thing came down. That’s where she sat, all the time, to smoke,” apartment building resident Barb Thede said.”She was very nice, very friendly. She helped me out when I needed it,” apartment building resident Tony Skinner said.The two women were trapped. But one, a 69-year-old woman, was able to get free and suffered only minor injuries.”Feet away from each other, and one basically walked away from it. The other was not as lucky, unfortunately,” Sheboygan Falls police Chief Eric Miller said.Neighbors said the tree that crashed down, and others on the hillside, have been a concern for some time. The one that fell Monday was marked for removal three weeks ago.The Sheboygan Housing Authority, which manages the property, marked nearly two dozen trees to be cleared in mid-November.The city of Sheboygan Falls, which owns part of the hillside, contracted to have the trees taken down, but a city official told sister station WISN 12 News that a work backlog had caused the tree removal to be delayed.It’s something residents here are struggling with.”Oh my God, I keep on thinking about it. And it’s a loss that shouldn’t have been,” Thede said.Police have not yet released the name of the woman killed by the falling tree.
