The Fairfax Historical Society is moving their artifacts out of their building on Main Street due to structural issues. Once the former town hall, now home to items hundreds of years old that give people a look back into their town’s past. While the society does receive some funding from the town, the pandemic has severely impacted their own fundraising efforts. With a lack of funds coming in and structural problems mounting inside the over 200-year-old building, they’re hopeful the community will step in and help.”There’s a lot of work that needs to be done,” Nicole Vance, president of the Fairfax Historical Society, said. “Pretty much everything in the building needs to be repaired from the roof to the siding to the basement.”The biggest problem and the first issue they need to address is the cracked foundation. Before work can begin on the building, or before the building suffers any more damage, the society is moving everything inside into storage to preserve the history. This week, volunteers will pack up items into a portable storage unit donated by Beaver Valley Storage.”Fairfax is a very giving community,” Kristine Irish, owner of Beaver Valley Storage, said. “Our community has been great with our business and we’re glad to help parts of the community like the school and these types of societies to make sure they can keep going.”The historical society is asking that people volunteer their time or donate moving supplies like storage containers and bins. They’ll begin the moving process Friday at 9 a.m. at their location on 1181 Main St.”We are definitely hurting for the funding that we need to complete the scale of the projects that we’re looking at right now,” Vance said. “We’re really going to rely on volunteer labor and donated resources.”Vance is also looking for skilled laborers to help with restoration and renovation projects on the building.
