Abby and Nick Chiarelli, a South Burlington couple, welcomed in the University of Vermont Medical Center’s first New Year’s baby Saturday morning. Abby Chiarelli’s due date was Dec. 23, but on New Year’s Day, Rosalia Lucille Chiarelli finally made her arrival weighing in at 9 pounds … 16 ounces for every day past mom’s due date!“I was really surprised because it was 3:30 before she was born so I assumed there would be other babies after the new year so I wasn’t expecting that at all,” says Abby Chiarelli about finding out her baby was the firstborn in the medical center for the new year. The Chiarelli family sure had their hands full when the clock struck midnight, so much so, they missed the clock strike 12!“We went past midnight without even knowing it went by. Five minutes later, the nurses said happy new year but we were in a tight situation there,” Nick Chiarelli said. Now the pair is looking forward to introducing baby Rosalia to her big sister, and having an extra reason to celebrate new years day for the rest of their lives.“We’ll have to party extra hard on new year’s day. It’s going to be fun. I can’t stop looking at her and talking to her and holding her. It’s been amazing, it’s only going to get better,” they say.
