CANTON, New York (WWNY) – St. Lawrence County’s Surrogate Court judge is retiring.
John Richey has been on the bench since he was elected in 2015.
The Massena native also filled in during that time on county and family courts in St. Lawrence and Franklin counties. He was also appointed an acting justice of state Supreme Court.
His retirement takes effect on February 17.
Before his election, he was principal court attorney to his predecessor, Kathleen Rogers.
The state administrative judge for the region has named Ogdensburg Judge Marcia LeMay to fill in as county surrogate judge.
“She came highly recommended. When I inquired of her whether she’d be interested, of course she said yes and that’s largely why I assigned her and ultimately she was approved by our chief judge,” said Judge Felix Catena, 4th Judicial District.
Richey’s resignation will set up an election for the job this fall.
Richey won election as a Democrat. His legal and judicial career also includes ten years as Massena town judge and acting village judge.
