Intense snow lasts into Friday morning
Over a foot of snow for most; icing in far southern Vermont
NBC 5 1st Warning Weather with Chief Meteorologist Tyler Janikowski. The snow has really, really poor. Yeah, it’s picked up in the last couple of hours. Yeah. And there is some wind out there up in the mountains, there’s no wind. But in the lower elevations we’ve really been seeing a wind out of the north to bring in the colder air. So it is blowing the snow around to some degree. And for most of us it is snow will make a stop in southern Vermont where there is freezing rain. And we just heard about those power outages. I just took a look too. There’s over 1300 in southern Vermont. It’s exactly where the icing is ongoing, where we thought the power outage potential would be because in northern new york, it’s just a dry snow and there’s very little wind. We’re not concerned about power outages there or in the champlain valley or in the Northeast Kingdom where the snow continues now. Earlier today it was rain in Lebanon for an extended period of time and for other parts of southern Vermont but that has obviously switched over to either snow or freezing rain and sleet where you see this pink color. And I did want to show you an advanced version of the radar because sometimes the, you know the pink and the green that you look at maybe on an app, it’s not always accurate, but this is a very powerful tool that we use anywhere. You see the solid red is definitely snow, It’s snowing over Killington right now. It has switched back to snow in Rutland. But then you see all this noisy yellow stuff that is indicative of the sleet or the mixing or something. That’s not great for snow to add up and you can see that mixed down there on the northern Bennington County line. But as we go through the night, the mixed line should slowly drop but it’s too slow to eliminate the icing concern in southern Vermont. So that’s why the power outage numbers will still go up into the morning hours there and this juicy storm goes all the way back to Ohio, so there’s like eight hours at least leftover of snow. A lot of that will include snowfall rates of an inch per hour. So the winter storm warning is up. We’ve got temps in the teens for so many though, it’s 30 in Bennington brattleboro raid around 32 degrees and that is where the rain or freezing rain is ongoing. So the north wind has mostly been in the champlain valley, that’s why its coldest there ushering it in from Canada. Look at Burlington right there, that is looking down towards downtown, the roads very snow covered. The airports still reporting a very heavy snow. That’s the scary gray cloud. That’s how you know, it’s a heavy snow report north winds sustained at 16 cold. So here’s future cast seven o’clock in the morning, the back edge coming through northern new york still icing in southern Vermont. So if you just do some back of the envelope math, it’s about midnight now. Seven o’clock, that’s seven more hours of icing for southern Vermont. So as we go along the snow really tapers through the morning hours. I think this would be a much lighter snow. Just snow showers later on, there could be like an inch of snow additional between nine a.m. In the afternoon. So when you spread that out over all those hours, it’s just very low impact. So if you’re trying to figure out when do I shovel, when do I snowplow? I think by nine or 10 in the morning it’s fine because whatever is left over is not very much, But by the morning it will be a foot at least could be up to 18″ in some spots, a lot less as you head down into southern Vermont where the icing is ongoing. So I really do think this purple area shows us the greatest concern. It’s basically Bennington County and Windham County for perhaps an in, I should say a half inch of ice and that is plenty enough to make the limbs bend over snap in some cases and cause some outages. So one of the jackpot zones for snow would be central Vermont montpelier barry, the granite quarries about 18 inches. And then we’ve got Burlington, 12, 14, 15, something like that. It’s a big one for the champlain valley rutland, about 15 inches and here’s the five day forecast. We have a beautiful weekend ahead. It’s a little bit cold to start, but with all the snow, the sun comes out on saturday. That’ll be nice. You can really feel the sun when it’s out this time of year. Making a difference now that it’s higher in the sky 25 on sunday and look at the rest of the forecast so much next week is gonna feel like a heat wave temperatures in the thirties to up near 40 degrees brian. All right. Tyler, mm hmm. Thanks.
