‘Not something I want to go through again’: Couple survived tornado sheltering in vehicle
The two pulled to the shoulder of Highway 5 as the tornado approached. The tornado blew out almost all the windows.
A couple in Central Iowa that went to pick up items for their wedding ended up in the path of a tornado Saturday, and they were forced to ride out the storm in their vehicle. A video recording shows the storm approaching as the couple pulled over along Highway 5. “The worst possible things ran through my head,” said Jacob Scott. “And I’m like, ‘Oh no. We’re in trouble.’ So, we’re trying to figure out what to do, and by the time we had it figured out, it was to us.”The tornado blew out almost all the vehicle’s windows, but the couple was not hurt. “If you are caught up in it, make sure that you have your seat belt on,” said Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Alex Dinkla. “Buckle that seat belt, be secure in your vehicle, and if you have a blanket or some other object in your vehicle, cover up,” he said. “Cover your head, and get away from the windows that might shatter in a tornado.”The couple returned the same night to their home in New Market, and they already have a new vehicle. “It’s not something I want to go through again,” Scott said. “I can tell you that.”
