Video: Firefighters rescue dog who fell through thin ice

Massachusetts firefighters ventured out onto thin ice to rescue a black lab that fell through the ice and into the frigid water Thursday.The dog, Jasmine, ran out onto the ice at Cat Rock Park. Firefighters say her owner did the right thing by calling 911 and not trying to rescue the dog herself.”Your first reaction, you want to go out there,” said Julie Collura, Jasmine’s owner. “I knew there was no way. I would break the ice as well.”A firefighter donned a yellow cold-water suit and crawled out onto the ice while his colleagues held safety lines. Just as the firefighter reached Jasmine, the ice shattered beneath him. The firefighter pushed the struggling dog up and out of the water, and Jasmine was able to tread across the remaining ice to reach the shore.”Hypothermia can set in within minutes for humans and that’s why we always tell pet owners, ‘Do not go in after your dog. Just call 911 and we’ll come effect the rescue,'” said Lt. Dean Munson of the Weston Fire Department.
