
MONTAGUE, New York (WWNY) – A man was found dead after going missing during Saturday’s SNIRT run in Lewis County.
In a news release, the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office confirms 72-year-old Fred Moat of Kirkwood, New York was found dead on Sunday in a heavily wooded area in the Town of Montague.
The man had dementia, participated in the SNIRT run, and went missing. A search team found his 2020 Polaris stuck off a driveway, near Salmon River Road in Montague around 1:00 Sunday afternoon.
Moat was later found deceased in a different location.
Several deputies assisted in the search, including the New York State Forest Rangers, New York State Environmental Conservation Officers, Lewis County Emergency Management, New York State Park Police, and multiple fire departments within Lewis County.
