Some Vermont lawmakers are pushing the legislature to move quickly on an environmental justice bill.If passed, S.148 would require state agencies to incorporate environmental justice into their work. Advocates say low-income, minority groups, and other marginalized communities in the state suffer greater burdens from environmental hazards. This bill would create an advisory council and require the creation of an environmental justice mapping tool.“This mapping tool is critical because it allows us to use a Vermont lens to look at environmental justice and what that looks like in Vermont. That includes looking at where do we have low-income communities that have been perhaps left behind? Where do we have people of color that perhaps haven’t been part of the process?” explains Rep. Kari Dolan. If passed in the House Committee on Natural Resources, Fish and Wildlife, the bill will go to the House floor for a vote by the end of the week.
