WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – Powerful storms are sweeping through parts of the north country Thursday afternoon.
The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties.
The watch means conditions are favorable for the formation of a tornado, not that a tornado is imminent.
The watch is in effect for the tri-county region as well as other areas of the state until 11 p.m.
The NWS also issued severe thunderstorm warnings for Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties until 5:45 p.m.
Ping pong ball-sized hail and 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts are possible.
There are some reports of downed trees and power lines, especially in parts of St. Lawrence County.
More than 1,800 National Grid customers in St. Lawrence County were without electricity as of 5:15 p.m.
