Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis held a news conference Thursday morning in the Everglades.Among the topics he discussed was protecting the Everglades and the high population of pythons in the area. DeSantis announced the 2022 Florida Python Challenge, which he says is a competition that will take place from Aug. 5 to Aug. 14. It will be hosted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the South Florida Water Management District. “This challenge, a python challenge, allows the public to engage direct, hands-on in Everglades restoration,” DeSantis said at the news conference. DeSantis says there will be cash prizes for the winners, including most pythons caught and longest python caught. There will also be additional prizes for military veterans who participate. People who want to participate will have to take an online training course in order to register, DeSantis says. Last year, 223 pythons were removed from the Everglades, according to DeSantis. “These pythons are a threat to the Everglades. They prey on mammals, birds, other reptiles,” DeSantis said at the news conference. DeSantis says he hopes the python challenge will help the ecosystem.
