SYRACUSE, New York (WWNY) – A Fort Drum soldier was shot and killed in Syracuse over the long holiday weekend.
According to the Syracuse Police Department, 19-year-old Malik Sharif Shipman was shot in his midsection.
He was shot in the 300 block of Parkway Drive shortly after 11 p.m. Monday. He died after being rushed to Upstate University Hospital.
Police said multiple casings were located on the scene, and at least two vehicles were struck by gunfire.
Onondaga County First Chief Assistant District Attorney Joseph Coolican said the investigation is just beginning and wasn’t prepared to give any more information.
Shipman, a native of Fairburn Georgia, graduated from Langston Hughes High School in 2020. He joined the Army and arrived at Fort Drum in July of the same year.
Private First Class Shipman was a carpentry and masonry specialist with the 642nd Engineer Support Company, 46th Engineer Battalion, 20th Engineer Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps.
He completed the Combat Lifesavers Course and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with PFC Shipman’s family and fellow soldiers,” said LTC Jon-Paul Depreo, 46th EN BN commander. “Our command is committed to ensuring every resource is available to his family and his fellow teammates during this difficult time. PFC Shipman’s compassion for his fellow Soldiers will be missed.”
