The price of a meal at one national restaurant chain just got more expensive. Macaroni Grill is now charging a $2 “temporary inflation fee.” The fee is tacked on the bottom of customers’ bills. Customer Alison Burke said she was surprised but “completely understands” the need for the restaurant to do that. Loyal Macaroni Grill customers sister station WESH talked to say they don’t mind. “We had the most wonderful service. Everyone was so helpful and friendly. Great meal. Good time out with friends. Definitely worth it,” Burke said. Macaroni Grill does warn customers with a sign on the door that the supply chain shortage and inflation are impacting their cost of doing business. The restaurant’s website goes on to say that it would have been easy to raise menu prices, as many restaurants have done, but considers the fee a temporary solution.However, some family-owned restaurants were appalled. Julie Casey is the owner and chef of the Outpost in Maitland. “Personally, I think it’s branding suicide,” she said. Casey said she frequently changes their menu to adjust to the economy, just like her customers. “We’re all suffering. Macaroni Grill is not the only one suffering. Consumers are suffering too. So in essence it feels like a punishment to the consumer for coming into Macaroni Grill,” Casey said.
