A new affordable housing project has broken ground in the North Country. Community members, elected officials and several stakeholders were in Malone on Tuesday attending Citizen Advocates’ groundbreaking ceremony for its newest affordable housing project, Harison Place.James Button, President and CEO of Citizen Advocates, said the project is nearly five years in the making. “We had a vision that started back in 2017 that we not only wanted to provide affordable, safe, stable housing, but also create economic development, civic resurgence, and removal of blighted property,” Button said. “This project is a realization of that vision.”The affordable housing complex is a collaboration between New York State Homes and Community Renewal and Citizen Advocates. It will feature 40 apartments along with five commercial spaces. Assemblyman Billy Jones said he’s been a fan of the project from the beginning and is excited to finally see it breaking ground. “This project is economic development anchor and people will see and it will contagious on what can be done here with the revitalization of downtown Malone,” Jones said. “It provides hope, it provides housing, it provides an economic development anchor for other businesses and the businesses that have been here.”The $22 million development will offer on-site services ranging from mental health and addiction recovery to community housing and living. Twenty apartments are expected to be reserved for people in need of supportive services or who have experienced homelessness. In a statement, Gov. Kathy Hochul said: “All New Yorkers deserve the opportunity to live in homes that fit their needs and provide them with a chance to thrive. Harison Place is a crucial investment in the wellbeing and health of the community and an important step forward for the village of Malone.””Harrison Place is different things to different people but to us, it’s a monument to the power of persistence and the power of getting things done when the community rallies behind a good idea,” Button said. The project is expected to be ready to open in December 2023.
