
New York State Police are still searching for a man connected to a recent Plattsburgh homicide.Larry Hicks Jr. was last seen boarding a bus headed towards the Texas-Mexican border.Hicks pleaded guilty to a 2001 murder in South Carolina and was accused of killing a woman in Darlington, South Carolina.Police say he is the one who stabbed 45-year-old- Monique Yanulavich. He is the main suspect in her death.Now, family and friends are organizing a vigil, all to bring awareness around the dangers of domestic violence — and to honor her life.“I felt sad for my family and my siblings because she played a big role in our lives as children,” said Reece Sharron. She is an intern for STOP Domestic Violence in Plattsburgh and was also family-friends with Yanulavich.“I felt really bad for my mom because she’s already gone through a situation like this and Monique was there for her with her aunt, and now she has to go through this with a longtime friend of hers? It brought up a lot of trauma for my mom,” she said.When Reece found out the relationship between Yanulavich and Larry Hicks Jr. was allegedly abusive, the intern for STOP Domestic Violence in Plattsburgh wanted to bring greater attention to the issue.“It’s a community issue, if the community doesn’t get involved, then they don’t know about it then they can’t help and they can’t speak out and it’s brushed under the rug like it’s been for the past centuries,” she said.STOP Domestic Violence says there has been an uptick in hotline utilization. In 2020, there was a total of 3,400 calls — so far at this point in 2022, they’re at 4,000.”I think one of the things that’s so important bout joining together, is that there’s a bunch of people saying no we’re not going to put up with this, this is not ok. And when society gets that info and gains that knowledge of this is frowned upon, that will change those social norms.”STOP Domestic Violence will be at Thursday evening’s vigil to honor the life of Monique Yanulavich they’ll be speaking along with handing out information on what to do if you are in a domestic violent relationship, or suspect someone you love is in one.The vigil will take place at the Samuel de Champlain monument at 7 p.m. Thursday.
