
The man who was shot by a Burlington police officer on Saturday has been arrested following his release from the hospital.Vermont State Police said David Johnson, 20, of Burlington was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday and immediately arrested. He appeared in front of a judge on Wednesday in Burlington where he plead not guilty to charges of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment connected to the police-involved shooting, as well as not guilty to a previous domestic assault charge involving a family member.An attorney representing Johnson asked that he not be sent to jail because of known mental health issues. An aunt had volunteered to step in as a responsible adult in-charge, however, the court decided to hold him without bail and keep him in police custody.Johnson was shot in the leg after he charged at a police officer on Saturday with a knife. The officer who shot Johnson, Sgt. Simon Bombard, fired three rounds during the encounter, with only one round hitting Johnson. One of the other rounds hit a police cruiser, while the third ricocheted off a parked SUV and shattered the windshield of a nearby truck.All three of the Burlington police officers involved in the incident are cooperating with Vermont State Police as the department continues its investigation.
