Weather vane successfully removed from historic Watertown Church

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – It was quite the sight Thursday morning on and above Watertown’s Public Square.

Crews used two cranes to remove the weather vane from the top of the steeple of First Baptist Church.

It took about an hour to detach the weather vane and gently rest it on the ground.

It will be taken to Converse Welding in Watertown for restoration. Eventually, the entire 112-year-old church will be restored.

A portion of Public Square was closed to traffic beginning at 7 a.m. The weather van was removed by 10 a.m. and the square was reopened.
