He was the 2017 national coach of the year at the University of Central Florida. But in his 4-plus seasons at Nebraska, Frost compiled a record of 16 wins and 31 losses, and never took the Huskers to a bowl game. Two-thirds of Frost’s losses in Nebraska were by a touchdown or less.“Earlier today I met with Coach Frost and informed him we were making a change in the leadership of our football program, effective immediately. Scott has poured his heart and soul into the Nebraska football program both as a quarterback and head coach, and I appreciate his work and dedication,” Alberts said in a statement. “After the disappointing start to our season, I decided the best path forward for our program was to make a change in our head coaching position.”Video below: Huskers’ Scott Frost post game press conferenceNebraska struggled in the opening games of 2022, first with a loss to Northwestern in Dublin Ireland, then with a win over North Dakota in a game that was tied as late as the 3rd quarter and then finally the loss Saturday to Georgia Southern 45-42 where the Nebraska defense surrendered a near-record 642 total yards. In November 2021, Alberts gave Frost a vote of confidence before the season was through by announcing he would return in 2022 under a restructured contract. The revised deal lowered Frost’s salary for 2022 from $5 million to $4 million and reduced his buyout from $15 million to $7.5 million if he was fired after October 1, 2023. The agreement set undisclosed metrics for 2022 that, if achieved, would have returned his salary to $5 million in 2023 and extended his contract through 2027.It’s not immediately clear how the firing announced Sunday will impact Frost’s buyout.Frost also fired four assistant coaches in November 2021 as part of his renegotiated agreement. With two games remaining in the season, the Huskers named Whipple the new offensive coordinator, and hired new assistant coaches Bryan Applewhite (running backs), Bill Busch (special teams), Mickey Joseph (wide receivers) and Donovan Raiola (offensive line).”Scott has laid out a clear plan and vision for the future of Nebraska,” said Alberts in November 2021. “We all recognize our record has not been what anyone wants it to be. I have been clear that I have been looking for incremental progress and I have seen that in several key areas this season.”Frost was part of two national championship teams as a player for Nebraska, including the 1997 season when he was starting quarterback.
