As leaf peepers continue to adventure through our region, the Adirondack Mountain Reserve wants to remind people that reservations are needed to both park and walk through their trails. The park and hike reservation system is in year two of its three-year pilot program.Reservations become available on a rolling basis at noon, two weeks in advance.Since the start of the reservation system, the trails that are accessible from the Adirondack lot on Ausable Road in Kene such as “Indian Head” and “Rainbow Falls” experience 50% less foot traffic, but the preservation of the land is not the only reason the system was implemented.“The second reason it was put in place was to provide fair and equitable access to all. It is a free reservation system,” said John Schuler, general manager of the Adirondack Mountain Reserve. The speed limit on New York Route 73 is 55 mph. When the Adirondack Mountain Reserve parking lot used to get full, drivers would park their cars along the road, which would lead to accidents and pedestrian hazards. it’s another reason why Adirondack Mountain Reserve implemented their parking program. “There are sections of Route 73 that are very dangerous. and it became a 55-70mph parking lot,” Schuler said. “It was to preserve both public and private lands in perpetuity for multiple generations to enjoy. We had 30,000 people a season in 6 months go through the gate. We keep our lands open, but it was stressing the lands at the same time.”Hikers now have to visit hikeamr.org, create an account, and then go to reserve their place to both park and hike trails accessible by the Adirondack Mountain Reserve lot off Route 73.This will guarantee a spot for hikers, so they don’t have to park off of the road if the lot is full.
