The Burlington Police Department closed all four murder cases in the Queen City this year.Today, an arraignment was held for 19-year-old Burlington resident Abdiaziz Abdhikadir in connection to the murder of 21-year-old Huessin Mubarak. Mubarak was murdered in July on Luck Street near Roosevelt Park.Abdhikadir pleaded not guilty after being charged with first-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder. Police added the attempted murder charge because they suspect Abdhikadir fired nine gunshots into Mubarak’s old North End home, while his family members were inside.Attendees at the hearing today included Mubarak’s family and Burlington Acting Police Chief Jon Murad.Murad believes this was a well-thought-out attack and shared that the two families knew each other well.”We believe it goes back to interpersonal relationships that have been a long-time evolving,” said Murad. “The people involved in these crimes, including the victim and our alleged perpetrator, did know each other for a long period of time. We believe there was an ongoing dispute between these families.”After many months of work, Chittenden County State Attorney Sarah George is happy they’ve got to this point with this case. “I’m certainly relieved to be at this point,” shared George. “We’ve been working very closely with Detective Moyer and Burlington Police Department. It’s a complicated case and it took more time than we think we wanted. Grateful to finally charge somebody, hold somebody accountable for this.” Chief Murad hopes the closure of this case reassures residents that safety is the city’s top priority. “We have solved and brought resolution to each of these 4 murders. The detectives in the Burlington Police Department don’t rest until they bring people to justice, particularly for crimes of this magnitude. Public safety is our priority.”Abdhikadir is currently awaiting sentencing on several other charges. If convicted of these most recent allegations, he faces up to life behind bars.
