The mother of fallen Maryland police Officer Amy Caprio hopes a new children’s book will help kids learn how to deal with grief.Caprio’s mother, Debbie Sorrells, read from her children’s book, “The Story of the Dragonfly,” which is available online and in Maryland bookstores.”Her dream to become a policewoman had finally come true. In the book, the Officer Amy character dedicates her life to helping others. After she’s gone, her spirit is represented by a dragonfly because, since Caprio’s death, Sorrells said dragonflies have become a powerful symbol.”At her funeral, a dragonfly appears,” Sorrells said. “It was like she was checking on friends and family.”The book is meant to help children with grief, and it was illustrated by Caprio’s sister, Laura. It is published by Apprentice House Press at Loyola University Maryland, the country’s first student-run publishing house.”It’s an absolutely amazing opportunity to get involved in the publishing industry and still be a student and get real-world experience,” said Natalie Misyak, an intern at Apprentice House Press.Apprentice House Press publishes books for free for authors across the country.Sorrells said she hopes the story of the dragonfly will help children understand that death is not the end.”Memories can keep a person alive. A symbol, perhaps, can be a trigger to remind them and remind you that Officer Amy is still there with you,” Sorrells said. “She’s still working.”Watch the video above for the full story.
