On Friday in Milton, families were getting in the holiday spirit by stopping by the Milton Youth Hockey tree stand off River Street.Since last Wednesday, The Milton Youth Hockey Association have been raising money for their hockey program through a Christmas tree exchange.For $60, people could get the tree of their liking, no matter the size. Valerie LeClair, a Milton resident for the last 27 years, wanted to get her Christmas tree from their tree stand to back one of the staple programs in their town.”I just think it’s really important to support the youth of the community and be a part of the community, ” LeClair said. According to Michael Mazzella, the Milton Youth Hockey Association president, the support doesn’t go unnoticed.”It’s great to have such a welcoming community come and try and support local programs,” Mazzella said. “Any support of any youth programs is fantastic.”All the funds proceeded to go a long way too.”It’s one of our big fundraisers,” said Scott Anderson, Milton Youth Hockey Association board member as well as a parent of one of the girls on the 6U team. “We pay for the jerseys. This fundraiser goes into buying ice time so the kids have somewhere to practice, especially when they get into the upper programs when they start practicing multiple times a week, traveling to games, and all that fun stuff. “Programs like this also teach kids life lessons that can apply off the ice. “It teaches them teamwork, hard work, and physical fitness, ” said Jeffrey Bartley, fundraising board member. “Hockey is a sport about communication.”But there’s one valuable lesson that is taught on the ice.”Really, it’s about having fun,” Bartley said. “Scoring goals, screaming, yelling, cheering on your teammates, that’s what half the battle is.”The tree stand will continue through Dec. 23.
