A dog in New Orleans survived shocking abuse that has been matched only by the incredible care and support she’s now getting from strangers. Macy, as her rescuers named her when they found her roaming the streets Monday, is estimated to be around 5 years old. Her owner and abuser are not known. She was found with her muzzle wired shut and nearly starving. The people who found her brought her to Zeus’s Rescues, a local nonprofit shelter, for help.RELATED: Animal advocates rally for dog severely injured in cruelty case“The wire was removed from around her face,” Zeus’ Rescues executive director Michelle Ingram said. “She was very thin. She had a tumor hanging off her back. She was scared, but not human-aggressive at all. Immediately, we gave her some treats and she cuddled right into us. Even though she’d been so horribly neglected and abused she still was OK with humans and wanted human love.”Ingram brought Macy to a local veterinarian and posted her picture to Instagram, asking for $2,000 in donations to cover her medical care. “We got $3,900 within 15 hours, so I’m just blown away by the support of the community trying to help Macy become whole again,” Ingram said.Zeus’s Rescues plans to use the extra donations to build out the upstairs portion of their building so they can rescue more animals. Ingram said the shelter continues to see more and more abused, surrendered, and stray animals every day.Thursday, Macy had surgery to amputate her tail, clean and debride the wounds on her face, remove the tumor on her back, and spay her. During the surgery, it was discovered that Macy also has breast cancer.
