Catamounts overcome third quarter woes to defeat Binghamton
Second six game win streak of the season for lady Catamounts
The preseason high expectations that surrounded the UVM women’s basketball team are coming to fruition, as the Cats finished off their sixth straight win Wednesday night, a 63-56 final over Binghamton.Delaney Richason led the charge for the Catamounts, dropping 21 points on an efficient 8-12 shooting, including three from distance. She hit huge back-to-back threes in the third quarter with UVM trailing by four in the third quarter, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish after Richason’s clutch stretch. If Richason was Batman, Emma Utterback was Robin, delivering 14 points on 6-12 shooting, despite fouling out in the fourth quarter. Utterback secured the game-winning steal and score in the fourth quarter, one play before collecting her fifth and final foul. Head coach Alisa Kresge said despite Utterback’s foul trouble, the team needed her momentum-altering play, but keeping her mentally sharp goes a long way for her style of play.”You feel like you’re being disrespected when people play off you,” Kresge said. “Then it’s a mental game. She knows what’s coming, really it’s important for her to keep working on it and keep practicing it. But those momentum shifters , like a steal or getting downhill on the left side. Emma is a talented player and we just gotta keep her mentally in it because we know she can hit those shots.”Now at 6-2 in conference play, the Cats will hit the road against 6-2 UMBC on Saturday, a battle for sole possession of third place in the America East.
