UPDATE: Tupper Lake man charged with making a terroristic threat

TUPPER LAKE, New York (WWNY) – A Tupper Lake man is charged with making a terroristic threat after a standoff with police at a village Stewart’s Shop.

David Payrot, 39, is charged with three felonies after Tupper Lake police say he pretended to have an explosive device in a backpack, while holding what appeared to be a detonator device.

Village police were first called to the Park Street Stewart’s around 2:50 p.m. Wednesday.

Neighboring homes and businesses were evacuated and New York State Police was called in to assist.

A perimeter was set up and state police K-9s along with a Special Operations Response Team were on hand.

State police negotiators convinced Payrot to surrender peacefully around 8:30 p.m.

No explosives were found and no one was injured during the incident.

Sgt. Jordan Nason with Tupper Lake Police said it was the ”best possible outcome you could hope for.”

Payrot is also charged with Burglary in the 2nd degree, a Class C felony, and Placing a False Bomb or Hazardous Substance in the 2nd degree, a Class E felony.

Police say the burglary charge is for food Payrot ate inside the Stewart’s during the standoff.

He was set to be arraigned around 12:30 a.m. Thursday in Tupper Lake village court.
