Sustained wind gusts out of the northwest are measuring 10-20 MPH throughout the region, with wind bursts being much higher, creating those brutal cold conditions.

On Mount Washington, the all-time record low temperature of -47° set in January 1934 is in jeopardy. The forecast at the summit calls for -45° to °50 Saturday morning.

Here’s a look at how the forecast compares with the records and season so far.

Looking at the records Saturday

  • Burlington, forecast low: -15° | record low: -26° (1963) | wind chill minimum: -41°
  • Plattsburgh, forecast low: -18° | record low: -20° (1963) | wind chill minimum: -41°
  • Montpelier, forecast low: -17° | record low: -21° (1971) | wind chill minimum: -44°

Saturday compared with this season so far

  • Burlington, forecast low: -15° | coldest so far: -2° (February 1, 2023)
  • Plattsburgh, forecast low: -18° | coldest so far: -10° (February 1, 2023)

  • Lebanon, forecast low: -16° | coldest so far: 5° (February 1, 2023)

What is the “polar vortex”?

The “polar vortex” is a circulation of very cold air which normally exists near the North Pole. Throughout winter, the vortex can weaken and pieces can break off. When a lobe of the polar vortex migrates south, it results in the coldest air of the entire winter.

That’s what happens Friday into Saturday.

A few reminders as the cold nears:

  • Limit time outdoors, consider adjusting plans Friday into Saturday
  • Check heating sources and water pipes to ensure they’ll be protected
  • Make sure humidifiers are good to go, this air will be very dry (dewpoints -30°)
