A restaurant in Ohio was having a hard time finding reliable employees, so they decided to make a hiring sign that has since gone viral. The phone has been ringing off the hook at Santino’s Pizza in Columbus. Manager Heather Stockton says it’s all because of a sign that reads, “Now hiring non-stupid people.””It was all supposed to be a joke, nothing serious,” Stockton said. Stockton says the sign’s been on display for months, but a social media post this week went viral, taking the attention to another level. “Any publicity is good publicity, bad or not bad. We’re going to have people that love the sign, people that hate it,” Stockton said. WBNS asked Stockton what the company defined as a non-stupid person.”Just reliable, on time, just, don’t come to work in like sandals,” Stockton said. Stockton said the pandemic has played a huge role in the quality of applicants. “Why go to actual work when they can just sit home and make a paycheck doing online stuff,” Stockton said. She says the business keeps facing no-shows or employees that don’t take the job seriously.”I had one employee that was in high school who thought it was OK to bring a Nerf gun in and try to start a Nerf war with another employee here,” Stockton said. The big question: Is the sign helping or hurting business?”We’ve gotten so many new customers,” Stockton said. Paul Robbins from Hilliard was one of them.”I thought it was funny. I didn’t think it was offensive at all, and so that made me really curious about this pizza place, so that made me decide to come in and check it out,” Robbins said. Fellow business owners said they understand the challenges and they will stand by the shop. “I thought that was awesome because they’re not saying people are stupid — they’re saying, ‘hey, let’s pay attention, let’s communicate, let’s get things going back to the way they’re supposed to be, helping each other,'” said Kathy Thomas, another business owner.
