Breezy, cold Thursday with some sun

Mixed showers late Friday, leading into a wet start to the weekend

Updated: 12:32 PM EDT Mar 30, 2023

ZURI: 5:43 ON YOUR THURSDAY MORNING. WEAPON, WHAT ARE WE THINKING FOR TODAY, WE HAVE SOME WIND OUT THERE? BEN: IT DEPENDS WHERE YOU ARE WHICH IS TYPICALLY THE CASE THIS TIME OF YEAR. WE HAVE SNOW IN THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS BUT THE SNOW SQUALL POTENTIAL WE WERE MENTIONING IS GONE AND HAS MOVED OUT OF OUR REGION AND THE COLD FRONT PUSHED IT OUT AND NOW WE HAVE THE COLDER AIRFLOWING IN THIS MORNING. WE’LL ZOOM IN CLOSER, NO SIGNIFICANT SNOW FALLING ACROSS THE REGION BUT WE HAVE SOME ELEVATION BASED SNOW SHOWERS THAT ARE CERTAINLY ONGOING. IT’S HARD TO SEE WITH THE BROADER VIEW OF STORMTRACKER IF WE TURN ON THE HIGHER RESOLUTION VERSION YOU SEE THE BROKEN SNOW SHOWERS MOSTLY ALONG THE SPINE OF THE GREEN MOUNTAINS AND WE’VE ALSO GOT ONE IN THE BRANDON AREA AND THERE ARE PARTS OF ROUTE 7 ESPECIALLY SOUTH OF FERRISBURG THAT ARE COVERED THIS MORNING AND MOSTLY DRY ROADS IN THE CHAMPLAIN VALLEY AND I-89 IN COLCHESTER LOOKING JUST FINE. WE HAD A LOT OF WIND DRY OUT THE ROADS OVERNIGHT BEFORE THEY HAD A CHANCE TO FREEZE OVER BUT IT’S A DIFFERENT STORY IN THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS. WE HAVE MATT DILORETO HERE IN THE WEATHER LAB HEADING ON TO A STRETCH OF 89 SHOWING UP WITH A LOT OF YELLOW AND ORANGE ON FIRST TRAFFIC. MATT, I ANTICIPATE YOU’RE GOING TO ENCOUNTER SOME SNOW. HOW ARE THE ROADS LOOKING RIGHT NOW, ARE YOU SEEING ANY ICE? MATT: YEAH, BEN, WE’RE CERTAINLY SEEING PLENTY OF ICE UNDER THAT SNOW-COVERED SLUSH AND WE’LL SHOW YOU THE DASH CAMERA RIGHT NOW. TEMPERATURES ARE RIGHT AROUND 20 DEGREES SO WITH A LITTLE ELEVATION, THINGS QUICKLY BECOME PRETTY DANGEROUS. EVEN THE WEATHER LAB WITH ITS VERY SPECIAL EQUIPMENT AND VERY GOOD SNOW TIRES WERE SLIPPING AROUND A LITTLE BIT WHEN WE TRIED TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOPLIGHT IN MONTPELIER. THE MEAT AND BONES OF THE SYSTEM CAME LAST NIGHT ASSOCIATED WITH THE STRONG COLD FRONT. WE HAVE SOME PRETTY IMPRESSIVE VIDEO FROM OUR VERY DOWN ON THE CAMPUS OF NVULYNDON LAST NIGHT WITH STRONG WINDS GUSTING 40 MILES PER HOUR BLOWING THE SNOWFLAKES AROUND AND WERE PRETTY BIG SNOWFLAKES STICKING TOGETHER WITH TEMPERATURES AROUND FREEZING. BUT OF COURSE TEMPERATURES HAVE PLUMMETED SINCE THEN SO WE’RE NOW IN THE TEENS AND 20’S ACROSS THE REGION. THE SUN IS COMING UP PRETTY SOON SO WITH THE STRONG MARCH SUN WE SHOULD SEE SOME IMPROVEMENT IN THE ROADWAYS BUT NOT SO MUCH IN THE TEMPERATURE DEPARTMENT, BEN. BEN: WE HAVE WHAT AMOUNTS TO BE A WINTERTIME AIR MASS CONTROLLING OUR WEATHER TODAY SO EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE THE SUN AND SKY FOR A DECENT AMOUNT OF IT, NOT DOING MUCH TO THE TEMPERATURES. WE’LL GET IN THE 30’S THIS AFTERNOON BUT WE’RE STARTING OFF IN THE TEENS IN NORTHERN NEW YORK AND MOST OF US STILL IN THE 20’S ACROSS NORTHERN VERMONT BUT NOTICE THE BLUE COLOR OP THE MAP, THAT’S THE WAY WE SHOW YOU WHERE IT’S BELOW FREEZING AND THAT INCLUDES EVERYBODY THIS MORNING, EVEN THE UPPER VALLEY. EVEN IF YOUR ROADS ARE MOSTLY DRY, ANY LEFTOVER MOISTURE COULD HAVE FROZEN OVER TO ICE OVERNIGHT AND IS A EXTRA CONCERN THIS MORNING. WIND CHILLS WHEN YOU FACTOR IN THE BREEZY NORTHWEST WINDS, TEENS AND SINGLE DIGITS, A BIG DIFFERENCE FROM WHERE WE WERE YESTERDAY AND WIND CHILLS STAYING IN THE TEENS AND 20’S WITH A DECENT AMOUNT OF SUN MIXING IN AND TEMPERATURES ONLY GETTING TO THE MID 30’S WHICH IS 10 DEGREES COLDER THIS TIME OF YEAR AND WE’LL HAVE BREEZY DAY. NOT QUITE AS STRONG AS WHAT WE’VE GOT NOW BUT GUSTS BETWEEN 20-30 MILES PER HOUR LIKELY ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING. IN TERMS OF SIGNIFICANT ADDITIONAL SNOW, WE’RE DONE WITH THAT POTENTIAL. THE SQUALLS ARE OUT OF HERE AND WE SEE A DECENT AMOUNT OF SUN TODAY AND THE CLOUDS ARE BACK FIRST THING ON FRIDAY AND THEN WE HAVE ANOTHER SYSTEM THAT COMES IN. IT LOOKS LIKE A ROUND OF LIGHT SNOW PRETTY MUCH EVERYWHERE BUT NOT ADDING UP EVERYWHERE, LIKELY A COUPLE INCHES IN THE HIGHER TERRAIN IN TIME FOR THE EVENING COMMUTE AND PROBABLY FLAKES IN THE AREA FOR THE BURLINGTON PLATTSBURGH AREA AND WILL MOVE OUT LATE FRIDAY AND SETS US UP FOR A VERY RAINY SATURDAY AS WE ACCUMULATE ABOUT A 1/4 TO 3/4 OF AN INCH REGIONWIDE. THAT IS ENOUGH TO BRING THE RIVERS UP A LITTLE BIT AND WE’LL HAVE TO KEEP AN EYE ON THE FLOODING POTENTIAL ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU COMBINE IT WITH THE SNOW MELT WITH TEMPERATURES GETTING CLOSE TO 60 BUT YET ANOTHER BIG CHANGE IN THE FORECAST GOING INTO THE 30’S
