A multi-vehicle crash involving a stolen Kia, a school bus, a silver Mercedes SUV, and a Milwaukee Public Schools pick-up happened right in front of a Milwaukee middle school. The driver of the MPS truck gave sister station WISN 12 News video of the moment the Kia slams into the school bus, creating a chain-reaction crash. That truck driver said he started recording because the Kia was driving recklessly and had already sped past him in the school zone multiple times before the crash.Another parent in front of the MPS truck called 911.”When I saw them coming this way, I dialed 911 right away because it’s reckless driving., they’re hanging out of the windows. In the process of actually getting in touch with a dispatcher, they turned around and everything happened so quickly,” Therese Nelson told sister station WISN Monday.Nelson had just dropped off her seventh grader when the mayhem happened.”Getting out of my personal vehicle to check to see if everyone’s OK — lots of screams, children crying — it was scary,” Nelson said.Milwaukee police said a 15-year-old seen on the cellphone video hanging out of the passenger window of the stolen Kia when it hits the school bus is now in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.Police said an 11-year-old boy on the bus was also hurt and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the people inside the stolen Kia bolted from the crash before officers arrived.Parents are outraged that reckless driving and dangerous behavior continue.”It’s scary. Very scary. Because this isn’t the first time I’ve seen reckless driving in this area during school hours. Stupidity. It’s sad, but it’s stupidity. They messed around and they found out, one person got hurt. Another person got hurt on the bus and his friends ditched him. Stupidity in my book,” Nelson said.Warning: This video may be considered graphic. Viewer discretion is advised.Milwaukee Fire Department says two patients were transported to local hospitals. Milwaukee Public Schools statement regarding Morse Middle School:“This morning, a reckless driving situation resulted in an incident outside of Morse Middle School during arrival. The incident resulted in injuries to an individual riding in the vehicle that was driving recklessly. Damage was caused to multiple parked vehicles, including a school bus. One individual who was exiting the bus at the time of the collision was also injured. Staff immediately worked to get everyone inside the building and contacted the police. MPS is taking proactive measures to keep our sites safe while reckless driving continues to be an issue in the community. This school year, MPS has placed hundreds of concrete bollards at our buildings and added other measures like fence posts, barricades, and cameras to our properties. We have also been actively working with representatives from the city and public safety partners to see how we can work together to identify areas that can be mitigated. While we are doing everything we can to enhance safety at our sites, we hope members of the community can understand the full impact of this issue. Reckless driving is dangerous, and we must work together to share this message with students. Adults can help by talking to children about safe driving and the consequences regarding dangerous behavior.”Stephen DavisMedia Relations ManagerMilwaukee Public Schools
