The man who died while in police custody in Bennington overdosed on a mixture of drugs, according to a Vermont State Police investigation.Investigators said 33-year-old Darrel Jones died of acute mixed drug intoxication including fentanyl, heroin and cocaine while he was being held in a cell at the Bennington Police Department in March.Jones was one of three people who were arrested on March 23 during a drug investigation at the Apple Valley Inn on Route 7.Officials said that Jones had a large quantity of drugs concealed within his person when he was taken into custody, and he subsequently ingested a large amount of drugs while in a holding cell, causing him to experience “extreme medical distress.”His death was deemed an accident.Officers found Jones unresponsive that afternoon, and unsuccessfully attempted to revive him.
