Vermont’s Dana wins Boston Marathon handcycle race for 2nd time
Keeseville’s Devann Murphy finished 3rd place
FOR WARMTH? LIZ: THE COUPLE TELLING US THEY LOOK BACK ON THAT DAY 10 YEARS LATER WITH A SENSE OF PRIDE BECAUSE OF THE COMPASSION THEY FELT FROM OTHERS ON THE COURSE. STEWART: YOU SAW THE MARATHON RIGHT HERE ON NBC 5. ATHLETES FROM OUR REGION JOINING NEARLY 30,000 PARTICIPANTS FROM MORE THAN 100 COUNTRIES. LIZ: IT WAS A CLEAN SWEEP FOR KENYA AS EVANS CHEBET WON THE MEN’S DIVISION WITH A TIME OF 2 HOURS, 5 MINUTES AND 54 SECONDS. AND HELEN OBIRRI WON THE WOMEN’S TITLE BY 12 SECONDS. STEWART: NBC 5’S BRIAN COLLERAN HAS BEEN AT THE MARATHON ALL DAY AND JOHN JUST NOW LIVE FROM THE FINISH LINE. A LONG DAY, BUT IT MUST HAVE BEEN SOMETHING. BRIAN: OH, AN ABSOLUTELY EXCITING DAY. IT WAS MANY YEARS AGO I GOT TO SEE THE START OF THE MARATHON FROM HOPKINTON. BUT SEEING THE FINISH HERE AND SEEING THE MOTION ON THE FACES OF THE PEOPLE WHO FINISHED AND COMPLETED THIS 26.2 MILES FROM HOPKINTON TO BOSTON IS UNFORGETABLE. LOTS OF TEARS OF JOY, LOTS OF TEARS OF JUST OF THE EXCITEMENT OF COMPLETING THE MARATHON. AS YOU MENTIONED, A LOT OF LOCALS IN THE RACE TODAY AND IT WAS A REALLY GOOD RACE FOR SOME OF OUR LOCALS INCLUDING PUTNEY, VERMONT’S ALISHA DANA. SHE WON THIS RACE IN 2018. AND IN HER SECOND TRY, SHE DID IT AGAIN TODAY. SHE IS A BOSTON MARATHON WINNER FOR THE SECOND TIME IN AS MANY TRIES, SHATTERING HER GOAL OF 90 MINUTES BY COMPLETING THE 26.2 MILES IN 1 HOUR, 18 MINUTES AND 15 SECONDS. DANA WAS FOLLOWED BY KEESEVILLE’S DEVANN MURPHY WHO ALSO WON HERE IN 2019. BOTH TELLING US THE WET CONDITIONS WERE TOUGH TO HANDLE BUT DID NOT TAKE AWAY THE MOMENT FROM RUNNING IN THE BOSTON MARATHON. >> I AM SORT OF SURPRISED BECAUSE IT WAS NOT THE BEST CONDITIONS. I WAS THINKING IF IT IS RAINING, I WILL NOT HAVE AS GOOD OF A TIME. BUT I FELT PRETTY GOOD OUT THERE. I FELT I WAS ABLE TO PACE MYSELF PRETTY WELL, AND IT HELPED TO HAVE SOME OF THE WHEELCHAIR RAZORS UP AHEAD TO TRY AND CATCH UP TO. >> CONSIDERING THE COLD AND RAIN, YEAH, I AM GOOD. I HAD FUN. THAT WAS THE GOAL. IT WAS A GOOD DAY. ANY DAY ON THIS COURSE IS JUST A GOOD DAY. BRIAN: BOTH WOMEN FINISHED IN THE TOP 20 OF THE 34 HAND CYCLISTS IN THE FIELD. DANA HAS NO REST AT OF HER. SHE IS GETTING ON A REDEYE FOR ITALY, THE WORLD CUP RACE STARTING IN A COUPLE OF DAYS THERE. DEVON MURTHY IS NOT GOING TO RATE — REST VERY LONG EITHER. HER HUSBAND IS RUNNING IN THE VERMONT CITY MARATHON AS WELL SOME OF. TWO OF OUR VOCAL COMPETITORS FINISHING VERY WELL TODAY. WE ARE GOING TO HAVE MORE FROM OUR LOCAL RUNNERS, INCLUDING WELL, COMING UP IN A COUPLE OF MINUTES HERE LIVE FROM BOSTON.
