Poultney Elementary School and Poultney High School closed their doors Thursday due to a reported issued regarding student safety.“We had a reported anonymous threat of a shooting,” said David Fox, Rutland County sheriff. “We didn’t have any specifics on who or where the shooting was going to take place. It originated on a school bus which we originally got from the anonymous party.”Law enforcement agencies have been investigating but have deemed the threat non-credible. They are still taking steps to make sure they’re cautious.“We since then generated numerous tips, from other people,” Fox said. “I believe getting information off of social media. Kind of expanding the whole scope of the investigation. We spent numerous hours last night, along with state police, investigating those possible tips.”The school district released this statement:“Upon receiving this information, administrators immediately contacted the Rutland County Sheriff’s Department, Vermont State Police, and the Vermont School Safety Center and began investigating this matter. At this time, we know of no information that leads us to believe there is a threat to our school community.”Both schools are scheduled to reopen for classes Friday. The sheriff’s office will have an increased police presence in the town. “As we’ve seen across the country, you never know when something is going to turn into a large major tragic event,” Fox said. “We like to get on it as quickly as possible and eliminate any non-issues to alleviate the public’s concern over what may be happening.”Investigators are still taking tips on Vermont’s Anonymous School Safety Tipline.
