Wednesday afternoon Sen. Bernie Sanders announced “Solar For All,” a $7 billion program that will help low-income Americans be able to better afford rooftop solar panels.”There will either be a grant or a loan going to middle-income, working-class, and lower-income families to help you buy your solar panels,” said Sanders. The program will provide up to 60 grants to states, municipalities, territories, and tribal governments that can then be given to residents to help with the cost of panels. “Folks, this is a big deal, especially for overburdened communities who are on the front lines of the climate crisis and who have been locked out of clean energy investments for far too long,” said Michael S. Regan, administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Entities can begin applying for grants now, and officials say money should start being shelled out within the next year. “This is a program for regular people, rural people, for working-class people across the state and the nation, that want to be able to contribute to an economy and a way of life that is better for the environment,” said U.S. Rep. Becca Balint. Officials also said we’re seeing the effects of climate change right now in front of our very eyes, referencing the Canadian wildfires and Texas heat wave, and said this program can be crucial in saving the planet. “When we talk about climate being an existential threat, that’s not rhetoric; that’s reality,” said Sanders.
