One rain delay did not slow down the Vermont Lake Monsters. The local Futures League squad was able to build on their 3-1 lead from Tuesday, Aug. 8 to secure the 7-2 win over the Worcester Bravehearts in game one of the league semifinals. Opposite of the hot start on offense before Tuesday’s rain delay, the Lake Monsters used strong defense featuring strong pitching, turning double plays, and picking off Braveheart runners attempting to steal stolen bases to maintain their lead. “It’s big, I’ve been harping on our defense,” said Lake Monsters manager Pete Wilk. “Defense wins championships and obviously pitching … a month ago we weren’t playing great defense, but we focused on it a bit more and we played great. I thought we played super defense tonight.” Vermont was able to secure the lead in the bottom of the 8th. Leading 5-2, Lake Monster Jordan Kang was able to seal the deal with a two-RBI single. He mentioned that he was glad to grab the hit for his teammates after claiming he made a few mistakes earlier, but also glad to do it for the fans who packed the ballpark to cheer on his team. “Yeah, it’s huge,” Kang said. “Being able to play in front of our fans here in Burlington it’s great. We can’t ask for much more than that.” Vermont will have to travel away from home for game two. They will face Worcester again at Fitton Field at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 10.
