Janette McComb sat high in the stands at Heardmont Park in North Shelby County, Alabama. It was just before 7 p.m., and the Oak Mountain High School football team was taking the field. Eagles head coach Shane McComb looked over his players during warm-ups. He smiled at his stepson Jayden Aparicio, a star Eagles cornerback. He glanced up at his wife. He turned back to the sidelines and got down to business.
It was 7:41 last Friday night — the first quarter was nearing an end. OMHS Director Of Athletics Chris Blight ran up to coach McComb. “Uh, coach … it’s time for you to go have a baby,” Sean said he was told. Shane McComb’s eyes swerved to the bleachers as his wife was being escorted down the steps. Coach McComb dropped his headset and ran, the fans roaring and on their feet.
“It was like something out of a movie,” Coach McComb said, chuckling. “I had the gas pedal down, and my flashers on, my wife was screaming, and my heart was about to come out of my chest.”
Coach McComb arrived at Grandview Medical Center just before 8 p.m. “She was eight centimeters,” Shane said. Two minutes went by. “Make that nine,” Shane chuckled.
