Vermont State Police are investigating a suspicious death near Vermont State University at Castleton near the D&H Rail Trail.Police said they responded to South Street at about 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. When they got there, they found a woman’s body. A witness told police they saw a possible suspect going northbound on the rail trail walking towards the Castleton Campus after they heard gunshots.The witness described the suspect as a white man about 5’10”, short dark-colored hair, last seen wearing a dark gray t-shirt and carrying a black backpack. Police believe he is armed and dangerous.No one is in custody right now. They’re asking residents to stay vigilant and report suspicious persons and activities to 911.Police are asking people to lock doors and vehicles. Do not leave keys in vehicles.The woman’s body will be brought to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
