WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – In a season of change, new signs are popping up in downtown Watertown.
They’re some of the most visible indicators of all that is different downtown.
There’s now a placard near the Roswell P. Flower statue on Washington Street. The area around the statue, and Washington Street leading to Stone Street, were extensively rebuilt this summer.
“Part of enhancing the monument was creating the interpretive sign to discuss why the monument is important and why it’s significant to Watertown’s history,” said Geoff Urda, city planner.
The placard has the story of the monument, which honors Governor Flower, a native of Jefferson County, the 30th governor of the state.
Over on Factory Street, Knowlton Technologies recently tore down a longtime bar, “Mick’s Place,” to put in a new parking lot for its growing workforce. There’s a brand new sign on the lot.
And biggest of all, the YMCA’s new aquatic and community center on Arsenal Street has a new sign. The $30 million project is almost done.
“I think those Y signs will be a great attraction for people to come down to the downtown area and be able to tour, not just our facilities, but also the restaurants – It’s just going to bring more people to the downtown area,” said Shawna Cutuli, Deputy CEO, Watertown YMCA.
