Ogdensburg ‘REDI’ after flood years

OGDENSBURG, New York (WWNY) – After the flood years of 2017 and 2019, New York state invested millions in building up the shorelines along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.

It was called the ‘REDI’ program.

Friday marked the ceremonial completion of REDI work in Ogdensburg, where $12 million went to improve Morrisette Park with better recreation opportunities, and the money helped renovate city docks and the marina, making them stronger.

“The investment really has bolstered our waterfront, both on the St. Lawrence and the Oswegatchie. Hopefully made changes that will benefit the region for the next 30 years,” said Andrea Smith, who is the city’s Director of Planning & Community Development, and the interim city manager.

The other two projects were improving the shoreline at Greenbelt Park, and along the Maple City Trail.

“The REDI program is one that really worked right. It went to places that needed to protect infrastructure, and develop economies along the river and lake. This is a smart investment and it’s a great day for Ogdensburg,” said state Senator Mark Wayczyk, (R-49th District).

Of the $12 million, $8 million came from the state and the city invested $4 million.

“As we develop more raw land we’ll have more marinas, and places for people to come here and boat, and enjoy their recreation vehicles. It’s just a quality of life for our people, and for people to come visit us,” said Ogdensburg mayor Mike Skelly.

Governor Kathy Hochul added in a statement that, “the completion of the city’s projects is a step forward in realizing the full potential of the Ogdensburg waterfront.”
