
BEAVER FALLS, New York (WWNY) – It was a busy Saturday on the high school gridiron with contests on tap both in Section 3 and the Northern Athletic Conference.
In Beaver Falls, a Section 3 Class D matchup as the Beaver River Beavers hosted Cato Meridian.
In the 2nd quarter, it was 8-0 Beavers when Dylan Buckingham took the pitch and scored from 12 yards out: 14-0 Beaver River.
The Beavers go for 2 and Derrick Zehr finds Kade Schneider in the back of the endzone: 16-0 Beavers.
Beaver River’s defense came up solid with a big hit from Bobby Hazard as the Beavers rolled to a 42-8 win.
In NAC Football, Potsdam traveled to St. Lawrence Central.
It was scoreless into the second quarter when Nathan White sliced up the middle on a 15-yard push: 6-0 Sandstoners.
With three seconds left in the half, Ian VanWagner looked for the Hail Mary, but instead tucked and scrambled, avoiding several tackles for a 41-yard touchdown.
Van Wagner rolled right and pitched to Liam McCargar for the extra two points: 14-0 Potsdam.
On the first drive of the third quarter, White handled the payload on a four-yard score.
On play action, VanWagner kept for five yards to the end zone.
Matthew Kirby scrambled for the extra two: 30-0 Potsdam.
Then White rushed 18 yards to the house to notch his third touchdown.
Chase Rozler added the two-point conversion as Potsdam blanks St. Lawrence Central 38-0.
In NAC Football, a non-league contest as Plattsburgh visited Canton.
Bears’ quarterback Charlie Todd escaped the grasp, firing off to Talan Green, who jetted the sideline, driving a yard short of the end zone.
That set up a first-and-goal for Brandon O’Shea who muscled in for the touchdown: 21-6 Bears.
Later in the second quarter, Todd escaped and connected with Green.
“Please Sir, may I have another?” Green scores on a 60-yard touchdown.
Canton goes on to beat Plattsburgh 41-34.
In college football, the University of Rochester was at St. Lawrence University.
On the Saints’ first scoring play, quarterback Will Lederman handed to Cameron Giunta, but the ball was fumbled just before the goal line and recovered by the Jackets for a touchback.
U of R’s, and Potsdam native, Will Varney got a first down and later a touchdown.
Lederman launched from midfield to Cole Salyrds for a 50-yard touchdown score. The extra point was from Clayton Fogler: 7-0 Saints.
Lederman fumbled and it was recovered by Rochester which set up a Jordan Laudani 30-yard field goal. He added another kick five minutes later to make it 7-6 Saints.
Rochester goes on to beat SLU 37-27.
On the soccer field, a boys’ non-league contest in Lowville as the Red Raiders met Mexico.
In the 2nd half it was 4-0 Lowville when Peyton Matuszczak unloaded a blast that found the back of the net: 5-0 Lowville.
Then it was Trey Smith with the rocket that bounced off the goalies hands and into the back of the net: 6-0.
Lowville goes on to blank Mexico 6-0.
On the girls’ side, a Frontier League contest in Adams as South Jeff hosted IHC.
South Jeff looked to strike first but Riley Monroe’s shot is hauled in by Gabrielle Burroughs.
Then it was Ali West with the shot on net that Burroughs makes the stop on.
Monroe would score in the 2nd half, giving South Jeff a 1-0 win over IHC.
On the ice, a Top 20 battle at Appleton Arena in Canton as 11th ranked St. Lawrence hosted 12th ranked Vermont.
The game was scoreless in the 2nd when Katina Duscio lit the lamp, putting St. Lawrence up 1-0.
A little under 3 minutes later St. Lawrence added to its lead when Abby Hustler connected on a power play goal: 2-0.
Late in the 2nd, it was Hustler with her 2nd goal of the game: 3-0 St. Lawrence.
St. Lawrence blanks Vermont 3-0.
On the men’s side, Clarkson hosted Vermont in a non-league contest.
In the 1st period Clarkson goes on top when Jesse Tucker buries the puck on the doorstep: 1-0 Clarkson.
The game was tied at 1 in the 2nd when Ryan Taylor sticks home the rebound: 2-1 Golden Knights.
Clarkson beats Vermont 3-2 in overtime.
Down the road in Canton, St. Lawrence met Penn State in a non-conference matchup.
The Saints take the lead in the 1st when Felikss Gavars dents the back of the net: 1-0 St. Lawrence after 1 period.
That would be all the offense for the Saints as Penn State beats St. Lawrence 4-1.
